The Book of John contains the story of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus, written by John, one of Jesus’ 12 close followers. This passage takes place shortly before Jesus goes to die on the cross and is part of a long teaching Jesus gives to His closest followers, covering many subjects. Read John 15:12-17 and write down answers to these questions:

  • What do you learn here about Jesus’s commandment to us? How does that inspire you to live for others?

  • What are two or three practical ways you can personally express this commandment of Jesus toward others?

Live

Put these New Commandments to love God above all and love others as Jesus does into practice. Specifically, come up with a sacrificial act—one that costs you something and for which you get nothing in return—that demonstrates love towards someone else. Then go out and do it as an act of love not only toward them, but also toward God who desires for you to love this way.
